Lesson. Week 1 Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes


Motor Skills Week 1
September 16 - 20

Ages 4 months - 12 months

Name game


"Hello ______, How do you do?  Please wave to us and we'll wave to you."
Say name and acknowledge their teacher and classmates by speaking and waving.


Arm stretches
Shoulder girdle stretches
Leg stretches

Group Activity

Tummy time:  Lay student on incline mat, working on back and neck strength.  Encouraging them to look up by waving scarves and ringing bells.

Crawling practice:  Lay student on incline mat and encourage them to crawl down/crawl up.

Walking practice:  Stand student next to a tall mat or tall block.  Encourage them to support their own body weight by blowing bubbles.  Obj. The student will learn how to adjust their own balance while reaching up for bubbles with one hand or both.

Closing Song

Sing, "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" with classroom teachers touching the student's body parts.
Blow bubbles on body parts while singing.


Ages 12 months - 24 months


Name game

Head

Ages  2 - 4

Name game

Say name and acknowledge their teacher and classmates by speaking and waving.

Warm-up

"Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes"
Singing very slowly and looking for students to identify body parts by name.
Practicing the skill of following along and working as a group.

Group Activity

Non-locomotor activities in a circle:

Reach up high
Reach down low
Clap hands
Stomp/March
Spinning around in a circle
Squat down low
Wiggle

Spinning around with arms out (requires everyone to take a step back and find a safe distance from neighbors)

Obj. The students will learn how to play safely by keeping a safe distance from their neighbors.  Students will also take away a comprehension that there are activities where you move but don't go anywhere.

Stretch/Cool-down

Repeat, "Head Shoulders, Knees and Toes."

Closing Circle

"What did you learn today?"
Give the students time to contemplate/remember and offer answers.

We learned who our motor skills teacher is and her name.
We learned how to play safely in the motor skills room.
We learned how to give our friends LOTS of space.
